The municipality of Kranj stretches across the central part of the Gorenjsko plain. To the west, the city reaches to the slopes of the Jelovica plateau. To the north, it is surrounded by the Kamnik - Savinja Alps, with the distinctive mountain peak of Storžič, the highest peak of the Kranj municipality, and to the south, it opens up to the fertile Sorško polje fields. The municipality of Kranj is situated at the intersection of major highways that run from Northern Europe towards the Adriatic Sea and from Western to Estern Europe. Also, the city has the Austrian and Italian borders nearby. Kranj is the fourt biggest city in Slovenia and is an important economic, administrative, trade, educational, cultural and sporting center.
