Kranj is a picturesque historic town above the confluence of two alpinerivers – the Sava and the Kokra. Due to its geographical position – onthe junction of important routes, leading from the Northern Europe tothe Adriatic Sea and from the Western Europe towards the Eastern Europe –Kranj is also a strong commercial centre. Kranj, being the fourthbiggest city in Slovenia, is industrial, employment, traffic, educational, cultural and sports centre of Gorenjska.
One of the main tourist attractions of the town are the tunnels under the old town centre. So far, more than 15.000 people have visited them. In the tunnels, many interesting events have been organised for both, adults and children (wine route, an exhibition of advent wreaths, the land of the Kranj dwarf, live Christmas crib, a labyrinth, etc.). Also Slovene president Dr. Danilo Türk has visited the tunnels. In 2009, the tunnels received a special award from the Slovenian Tourist Organisation, known as Srebrni Sejalec (Silver Sower) - a prize for creative and innovative achievements in tourism contributing to the greater popularity of Slovenia’s tourist attractions and services.
