The Strmol Castle (today a protocol estate of the Republic of Slovenia) is situated in the village Dvorje near Cerklje in the Gorenjska region. The castle was first mentioned in the 13th century although the data on its origin are not reliable. The castle lies on a steep slope at the bottom of the hills Dvorjanski hrib and Kozji hrib, the name 'Strmol' attesting to this position. A graphic representation by Valvasor dating back to 1675 shows Strmol as a four-storeyed palatium with towers, surrounded by defence walls and defence towers, which have protected it since the beginning of its existence. The castle lies amidst beautiful surroundings, its grounds stretching over the forest on the northern side and a magnificent park with some rare species of trees and a small pond in the south. The furniture and decorations of the previous owners (mostly in the Baroque and Rococo styles) have been preserved, which is rare when it comes to castles in Slovenia. Before the Second World War the last owners of the castle were Mr and Mrs Hribar, who contributed a great deal to the development of Slovenian industry (Šumi, Pletenina) and were also important patrons of art (Modern Gallery).
Address: Dvorje 3, 4207 Cerklje na Gorenjskem. Visitations for groups are possible upon previous arrangement with the State protocol services of the Republic of Slovenia.
