One of the main tourist attractions of the town are the tunnels under the old town centre. So far, more than 15.000 people have visited them. In the tunnels, many interesting events have been organised for both, adults and children (wine route, an exhibition of advent wreaths, the land of the Kranj dwarf, live Christmas crib, a labyrinth, etc.). Also Slovene president Dr. Danilo Türk has visited the tunnels. In 2009, the tunnels received a special award from the Slovenian Tourist Organisation, known as Srebrni Sejalec (Silver Sower) - a prize for creative and innovative achievements in tourism contributing to the greater popularity of Slovenia’s tourist attractions and services.
The canyon of river Kokra
The canyon is an almost 30-metre deep gorge the river Kokra cut into a conglomerate terrace through Kranj dating back to the Ice Age. It is a variegated mosaic of aquatic and waterside biotopes comprising the river, bank, gravel pit, meadow with the flooded woods, rock blocks and conglomerate walls. Such a dynamic and variegated area thus represents a shelter and a home to numerous and in terms of vital necessities extremely variegated flora and fauna. It is protected as a natural site and part of Kranj’s old town centre. There is an educational trail in the Kokra canyon.
