Traditional events

Kranj is a festival town pulsating to a number of cultural and traditional events throughout the year, attracting visitors from far and wide. The diversity and close connection with the environment and its history offer endless opportunities for different events every year, within both, programmes and promotion. The biggest events take place in the streets of the old town centre and also in its surroundings. Throughout the year, concerts of famous music groups from Slovenia and abroad are organised in Kranj’s sport halls. By opening of the Luna Garden at the Khislstein Castle, an enriched variety of concerts will be offered.

In Kranj, a year begins with its cultural holiday when the biggest Slovenian open-air event takes place in the streets of Kranj - The Prešeren Fair. For some hours, the town goes back in time to the 19th century when the greatest Slovene poet Dr. France Prešeren lived and worked here.

On Shrove Saturday, Kranj gets the real Carnival atmosphere. It is also a member town of the Federation of European Carnival Cities (FECC). On Shrove Tuesday, a great carnival festivity in the old town centre is organised for children.

Since 1970, every March is marked by the Week of Slovene Drama, including best performed plays from the recent year, many round tables, screenwriting’s workshops. At the end, literary prizes are awarded; the Rudi Šeligo prize for best performed play, and the Grum award for best Slovene screenplay.
In the end of March, the Scouts of Kranj organise a cleaning action - Let’s clean Kranj – Kranj is no longer dirty – through which the town and especially the Kokra canyon are cleaned.

In May, Kranj hosts the biggest youth festival known as The Week of the Young. Since 1995, it has become the biggest Slovene youth festival. Numerous events from different fields of interest are organised: sports, youth, culture, music, education, children, and international contents, attracting thousands of young people to the capital of Gorenjska every year. Over 100 events take place within the programme, being divided into eight categories meeting different wishes of the youth. Happy faces, good mood, meeting friends and getting to know the people – all these can describe the festive atmosphere of Kranj during the festival.

Since 2003, every May professional and amateur bikers of all ages and also families have a chance to gather and spend a sports day at the Kranj - Jezersko cycling marathon, also known as Memorial Mirko Kraker Memorial.
In the end of May, the international Kranj Cycling Grand Prix takes place – also known as Filip Majcen Memorial. Apart from that, a cycling race around the streets of Kranj is also organised. Both events represent a rich cycling tradition in Slovenia. These are Slovene biggest and oldest one-day cycling events on an international level.

Each year, a record number of participants take part at the Mayor’s run, traditionally taking place since 2000. Young and old, families and groups gather with a common wish for healthy lifestyle, recreation, sport spirit, fun, meeting people, and above all – to raise money for charity and thus help those who need it most.

In the beginning of June, Besnica Sports Society organises a traditional festival of Slovene folk music, known as Zlata Voščenka (Golden Wax Apple). Music groups perform remakes of folk tradition songs. Apart from that, also a competition of accordion players is held.
At the end of a school year, the Kranj Radio traditionally celebrates its birthday. The event is known as Megasrčkov rojstni dan (The Mega Heart’s Birthday) and takes place at Slovenski trg (Slovene Square).
Summer nights in the old town centre offer selected events within the multicultural Carniola Festival.

Visitors from near and far travel to Kranj in the end of July, drawn by the most popular entertainment event in the Gorenjska region – Kranfest festival with the traditional Kranj Night. Offering a rich and varied programme of entertainment, the event ranks among the largest Slovene festivals, attracting more than 10.000 visitors from all parts of Slovenia.

The most successful musicians improve their knowledge as well as get and give new ideas at the International Kranj Jazz Kamp. Slovene and foreign jazz and pop musicians gather and perform their songs in Kranj every August.

The end of August is marked with Rekreatur - a cycling event, combining the charm of stage cycling races and tourist cycling. The aim of the event is to promote healthy lifestyle and awareness of natural protection, and to get to know interesting places and people. Each stage of the race starts and finishes in a different Slovene town; however, the main finish of the entire race is always set at the Main Square (Glavni trg) in Kranj.
